Epic Space Battle

From JP Aerospace's Blog
These legos could be our legos

What these guys are doing is actually pretty interesting. They want to establish a floating space platform at 90,000 feet where they hope to launch orbital and extraorbital manned vehicles. The above is just baby steps. More about their crazy plan.

This is an Outrage!

From THR

The wreckage in Midtown Manhattan, all told, would top the financial carnage of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the Japanese tsunami.

Check Out This Crazy Thing

German automation company Festo has created an extraordinary helium-filled flying robot that propels itself through the air by repeatedly turning itself inside-out. The creation, known as the SmartInversion, moves like a jellyfish as its extremely lightweight body inverts itself with a rhythmic pulsating movement. Hit the jump to see it in action!

Kickstarter Challenge

2012 Challenge!

Picard in Space. I will not suggest that we all need to come up with something as sophisticated as the above Kickstarter project... But what if we each came up with Kickstarter projects and commited to encouraging one another to complete our respective projects within 2012? Sound like fun?

My Home Was Video Game-ized!

After that, I was feeling tired so I broke open a bunch of dishes to recover some hearts. Felt much better.

Based on your interest in... (Mass Effect)

Want to play a game where you are the captain of this ship:
with a crew of over fifty lower ranked men and five close officers? Hollywood has not delivered on blockbuster science fiction in years. Where is this generation's 'Undiscovered country", our 'Aliens' our 'Solaris'or '2001'? Its in a video game--> 'Mass Effect' Have you guys heard of it? It is a three part trilogy all on the XBOX 360. Based on ya'lls interests on this blog i'm confidantthat you will love Mass Effect. This is something you can play while your wife watches you old men. Great dialouge and characters, coupled with deep ethical, philosphical and exestential questions make for a fantastic and high stakes action game. Here is the trailer for the first one (can't embed): http://youtu.be/nqBpRJ7qgaM there are three games now and the story concluded, but i reccomend not spoiling the later chapters. the descisions you make carry over into the subsequent games and have weighty consequences. Choose to be diplomatic, or aggresivly intimidating. here is an article on the cultural importance of this game: http://kotaku.com/5886178/why-mass-effect-is-the-most-important-science-fiction-universe-of-our-generation?tag=masseffect xbox is now about 200$ at gamestop. well worth mass effect. ...and a buncha other games im gonna make you play once you buy it ;)

Real Live Yoda; or the Reason You Haven't Seen Many Posts from Me

Doing well, hope everyone is.

Me sleeping, not much.

P.S. This is in compliance with our "no personal stuff or politics" terms (because of the shirt you see). If this were a baby Newt Gingrich in a Yoda shirt, we'd have a problem...

Somebody send this to Trent Reznor

Because as I watch it on mute while Avery naps it sure seems like it is calling out for a soundtrack from The Downward Spiral.

See Worf's ideas get shot down... for FIFTEEN MINUTES.

It's a little hard to sit through the whole thing, but you get the idea. For a Klingon, Worf sure lets everyone walk all over him.

Proof that the Extremely Wealthy are Morally Depraved, Total Geeks (Can we sign up for “coupon day”?)

Playboy is about to launch into the final frontier, at least in its imagination.

The iconic adult-magazine company has dreamed up a vision of a Playboy Club in space — a sprawling sci-fi-inspired depiction of fun and games on a huge private space station – in conjunction with the space tourism company Virgin Galactic. The results appear in the March issue of Playboy magazine on newsstands now.

A zero-gravity dance club, a casino featuring "human roulette" and a restaurant for fine dining are just some of the amenities envisioned by artist Thomas Tenery and released by Playboy Tuesday (Feb. 22). The magazine worked with several futurists and scientists, including Virgin Galactic head designer Adam Wells, to illustrate the potential space Playboy Club.

"As Virgin Galactic gets closer to becoming the world's first commercial space line, Playboy is eagerly pondering the creation of the ultimate intergalactic entertainment destination," Playboy editorial director Jimmy Jellinek said in a statement.  "This heaven-in-the-heavens will exceed starry-eyed travelers' wildest dreams, and guests will truly experience a party that's out of this world."

If you ask me, this blog is getting way too high brow

Room 237 Documentary

Have you guys heard about this documentary? It examines all the wack-a-doo theories about hidden meanings buried in "The Shining." But then again, who am I to say they're wack-a-doo? I don't know that I believe Kubrick put hidden messages about the faked moon landing or the Holocaust into the movie, but I do appreciate that he leaves his movies open ended enough for these kind of interpretations and analysis.

Anyway, it's playing at a festival in New York soon before getting a actual release - Morgan, if the planets align would you be interested in seeing this with me?

Here is the NY Times write-up.

And just for good measure, here is one of those wack-a-doo theories. Again, don't know that I buy it, but I like how much attention this guy is paying to the details. The thing about the blue scarf in "2001" blew my mind.

Why cant I get it up for Link anymore, doc?

An excerpt from a great article about Zelda, how it needs to change and where it went wrong.

 zelda-just-keeps-getting-worse-but-it-isnt-beyond-saving

'This world, dangerous, demanding exploration, must also be mysterious. This means: illegible, at least at first. Zelda needs new unstated rules, ones that must be relearned, even by Zelda veterans like myself. How can you truly explore if you know how everything works already? How can you ever be surprised if every ‘secret' is conspicuously marked as such? Hyrule needs space to breathe, fields of purposeless grandeur (like Shadow of the Colossus), where secrets could be anywhere because they're not obviously right there. What is an adventure if not a journey through an unknown landscape? It's not a retread across familiar ground, the car ride to work, the province of sleepwalkers. '
